A GARDENING GUIDE FOR HOME AND TERRACE

Soil and Fertilizer

Soil:

For good nutrition and drainage, lighten potting soil by making a compost of potting soil plus peat moss, sand, vermiculite or pearlite. See information on sources of plant supplies.

Soil-less mixtures (a potting medium that contains peat, usually perlite or vermiculite, and, sometimes fertilizer, but no soil), are an alternative. They may require chemical feeding, which may or may not be desirable.

Fertilizer:

Fertilize with liquid plant food every fourth watering during Spring and Summer (except for newly potted plants). Less is more with fertilizer as with watering. (is liquid fertilizer preferable?)
